DR. ALSHUTH'S TEACHING EXPERTISE

Home /  Online Courses

For more than 30 years Dr. Alshuth has developed and taught undergraduate and graduate level marine science courses and held positions as Full Professor of Oceanography, Adjunct Professor and Graduate Teaching Assistant at various international European and US Research Institutes and Universities.

While initially trained as a marine biologist and oceanographer, Dr. Alshuth has developed a passion for teaching early in her career. She developed and taught marine science courses at various international research and educational institutions, including traditional face-to-face, blended (hybrid), hands-on field trips and lab courses, and distance—learning courses throughout her career. Her interest in non-traditional teaching styles evolved in the mid 90s from developing and teaching distance learning courses - using video tapes and frequently mailing out letters with weekly instructions and review sheets to her students - to developing and teaching online internet courses since the late 90s using various Learning Management System (LMS) platforms such as WebCT, Angel, Blackboard, and Canvas.

For more than 20 years Dr. Alshuth has developed and taught undergraduate and graduate level marine science online courses at SACS accredited colleges and universities. Dr. Alshuth is a QM (Quality Matters) certified online course and digital content developer and QM Subject Matter Expert. She also serves on the State of Florida’s Scientific Course Numbering System Committee for Oceanography and a number of other marine science related committees, and on the committee of a Pilot Study for Virtual Office Hours, and has been a reviewer for a number of marine science journals and textbooks. For some of her courses textbooks are not yet available in print or digital form. In these courses Dr. Alshuth assembles an online textbook from online material, enriched by her own ocean photography.

Dr. Alshuth's has very effective communication and teaching skills, enhanced by her research experiences - additionally enhanced by extensive specialized technical computer skills in developing custom-made online marine science courses. Her courses require students to explore and investigate knowledge-based solutions related to marine resource and environmental sustainability. Dr. Alshuth's courses include not only online-virtual field trips to marine science (company and research institution) related websites, but have also included physical field trips with integrated hands-on field work and lab courses (when supported by the perspective institution and their insurance resources).

Dr. Alshuth encourages Experiential Education and Learning (ExEL) projects by providing additional credit and contact resources for companies and institutions in related fields where students can volunteer their time for hands-on applied experience in the respective course field. This has been an extremely popular asset to her course model.

She has had student interns working at the Smithsonian Marine Station’s Eco-Exhibit used the space for coral budding and other coral research activities, and ExEL student volunteers with various local and distant marine science institutions including  Vero Beach Marine Institute (Florida Institute of Technology), Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Marine Environmental Learning Center, Pelican Island Audubon Society, Smithsonian Marine Station, Triton Submarines, and Treasure Coast Coral. Her students and Dr. Alshuth have collaborated with the NOAA – Harmful Phytoplankton Monitoring Network (PMN) - monitoring harmful phytoplankton algae in US coastal waters and beyond borders.
