1988 - Ph.D., Biological Oceanography - Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, University of Bremen

1986 - M.S., University of Bremen, Germany

1983 - B.S., University of Bremen, Germany

Dr. Alshuth's Ph.D. (= Dr. rer. nat.) is in biological oceanography. Her thesis focused on oceanographic factors influencing larval transport and fish recruitment - and their impacts on marine fish stock assessments, fishery inventory and marine resources. Her thesis was based on data collected by her during more than 20 oceanographic expeditions - 17 of which she was the designated Chief Scientist.

Dr. Alshuth’s research interests evolved from the cold polar and temperate seas she grew up around to warmer and more species diverse and colorful tropical seas - from high to low latitudes - only increasing her passionate attitudes in marine science. Her thesis and postdoctoral research combined physical oceanographic and marine biologic factors to better elucidate biological oceanographic phenomena (offshore/onshore current drift transport, upwelling, downwelling, defined hydrographic layers - haloclines, thermoclines and stable stratified density systems) affecting larval food supplies and larval distribution - much of which is now very relevant in identifying and monitoring current climate change impact research. She held research positions at various marine laboratories and universities in Europe, Canada and in the US.

Her areas of research include oceanography, fisheries ecology, resource management, coral reef ecology, anthropogenic marine impacts and mariculture.

Dr. Alshuth has been either a researcher or faculty member in the US since 1991. Reflecting on her own career path - she has been a part of the ebb and flow of many marine research programs and laboratories - sadly many of which no longer exist due to shrinking economic resources.

Dr. Alshuth had many years of both offshore, inshore and coastal biological oceanographic field research experience including Chief Scientist on 17 oceanic research expeditions administering a research team of 12+ scientists and related staff. Additionally, she participated in 19 oceanic expeditions as participating research scientist onboard various interntational research vessels conducting oceanographic research in the Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Caribbean Sea.

Dr. Alshuth' tropical oceanic photo and video expeditions take her to exotic places and islands in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Dr. Alshuth has published most of her research in peer-reviewed scientific, marine research related journals and magazines. She reviews scientific publications for NOAA and NMFS international research journals and is recognized reviewer for marine science and oceanography textbooks.
