Dr. Alshuth was involved in joint research projects with the Caribbean Marine Research Center at Lee Stocking Island in the Bahamas, with Duke University's Beaufort Laboratory in North Carolina and participated in many oceanic research expeditions. Prior to Harbor Branch, Dr. Alshuth worked as research scientist at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Canada), in Germany at the University of Kiel's Institute of Marine Science, Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, at the Helgoland Biological Station for Marine Research at Helgoland Island, and at the University of Bremen. Dr. Alshuth worked as a consultant for the Department of Oceanography and Island Shipping Company, and for the German Research Shipping Company RF - Reedereigemeinschaft Forschungsschiffahrt.

Dr. Alshuth is a biological oceanographer with wide-ranging, interdisciplinary interests in general oceanography, bio-physical interactions of the ocean, fish ecology, fish recruitment, deep sea research, coral reef ecology, aquaculture and marine science internet graduate and undergraduate course development. Dr. Alshuth received her academic degrees from the University of Bremen in Germany (B.S. 1984, M.S. 1986, Dr. rer. nat. = Ph.D. 1988 from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research), and she has taught ocean science courses at graduate and undergraduate levels for more than 30 years at several international universities and oceanographic research institutes.

In 1991, Dr. Alshuth’s academic career took her to the United States. At Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute she took a position as a research scientist in biological oceanography, studying fish reproduction and recruitment. Dr. Alshuth received grant awards for her marine research from the Link Foundation and grants from the Department of Environmental Protection, South Florida Water Management District, Day Cancer Foundation and Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center.

Dr. Alshuth has been Chief Scientist on 17 oceanic expeditions with RV VICTOR HENSEN (100’ research vessel), and RV UTHÖRN, leading a research team of twelve scientists from different oceanographic disciplines, directing operation and research, and writing expedition reports and publications. Dr. Alshuth participated in international research expeditions to the Atlantic, Arctic, Mediterranean, Pacific and Caribbean Sea, in oceanographic research projects such as the Greenland Sea Project and JGOFS program, in oceanic research expeditions such as the two-months expedition to the Arctic on RV METEOR, the two-months expedition to the Atlantic on CSS HUDSON, and deep-sea research on RV CAPE HATTERAS. On the RV SEAWARD JOHNSON Dr. Alshuth had the unique opportunity to perform deep-sea research while diving in the JOHNSON-SEA-LINK Submersible, 3,000 feet deep in the Bahamas Archipelago.

Dr. Alshuth’s Expeditions took her around the World from Europe to Africa, America and Sri Lanka, to places such as the Archipelagos of Bocas del Toro, Bahamas, St. Vincents and the Grenadines, the Netherland Antilles, Canary and Hawaiian Islands.
