TROPICAL ATLANTIC

The Bahamas - an archipelagic state consisting of nearly 700 islands, cays, and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, is a country within the Lucayan Archipelago in the West Indies. The 6.4 km (4.0 mi) thick limestones, which predominate in The Bahamas, date back to the Cretaceous Period. Solution weathering of the limestone results in a "Bahamian Karst” topography, including potholes, blue holes, sinkholes, beach rock, limestone crust, and sea caves.

Dr. Alshuth explored the nearshore communities and coral reefs of the archipelago, various anthropogenic and natural impacts, ranging from pollution, tourism and unsustainable fishing activities to recent global climate change.
