RV SONNE  

The RV Sonne, a German deep ocean research vessel operated by the University of Hamburg's Institute of Geology in Germany, specializes in conducting seabed surveys (bathymetry) with different high-precision echo-sounding systems and seismic surveys. The RV Sonne was a former German fishing trawler converted into a research vessel by Schichau Unterweser AG, doing mostly geoscience related oceanographic research for a variety of commercial and scientific clients. This research vessel is a multipurpose working platform for marine and related disciplines: physical and biological oceanography, marine geology, marine and atmospheric chemistry, marine geophysics and meteorology. Though RV SONNE operates mainly in the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, Dr. Alshuth participated in a geophysical research expedition to the Central North Atlantic, assisting in testing and documenting geophysical and seismic instruments used for bathymetric research in 1991.
