FS VICTOR HENSEN

Dr. Alshuth participated in the longterm fisheries research project Reproduction Biology of the sprat, Sprattus sprattus, in the North Sea funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungs Gemeinschaft) as part of the International Recruitment Project - IRP during 1985-1988). As chief scientist, fisheries ecologist and biological oceanographer, Dr. Alshuth’s oceanographic research onboard the FS VICTOR HENSEN of the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven (Germany) included marine ichthyological studies on fish reproduction and recruitment using bottom, pelagic trawls and RMT for adult and juvenile fish collections as well as gear evaluation for sampling. BONGO and ring plankton nets were used for ichthyoplankton sampling, and physical probes for biological oceanographic monitoring, and various sampling devices for water chemistry analysis. Other research onboard the VICTOR HENSEN included pelagic fish community and population density studies, as well as fish diseases and parasites. Benthic sediment samples were taken with Ekman and Van Veen grab samplers to study geological features of the ocean floor associated with infaunal densities, and epifauna diversity analyzed associated with fish diet studies. Chemical oceanographic parameters were analyzed using CTD probes. Her research in the laboratory emphasized on fish physiology, larval and juvenile culture and nutrition, otolith increment studies and juvenile growth and aging. Dr. Alshuth was Chief scientist on 16 ocean cruises onboard the RV VICTOR HENSEN, leading a research team of ten scientists with specific oceanographic research goals and projects, and directing operations and research. Research included statistical analysis and preparation of reports, and publications including:
